Funded position for “Postdoctoral Fellowship” in Surgical Robotics

We are hiring a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral fellow with past experience in medical robotics and especially haptics-enabled robot-assisted surgery to work on a project at the University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada. The University of Calgary is pioneer in medical robotics and robot-assisted surgery in Canada. The research project is multidisciplinary and aims to design and develop a microsurgery-specific manipulator equipped with high-definition force –feedback, safety features, and operational space control to improve the intuitive use of tele-operated surgical robotics.

A state-of-the-art slave manipulator will specifically be designed, developed and optimized in order to provide enhanced accuracy, precision, dexterity, ease of motion, specific to microsurgical requirements. The project takes advantage of the unique infrastructure at Project neuroArm, which allows the quantitative and qualitative assessment of kinematic and dynamic performance of the manipulator from mechanical, electrical, control and safety aspects.

Microsurgeons/neurosurgeons will be involved as end-users who will translate the outcome of the research to microsurgery, helping to develop and test the efficacy of the engineering design. The research brings together engineering and clinical expertise at the University of Calgary (led by Professor Garnette Sutherland, a lead investigator in the field of iMRI and surgical robotics).

The research will require a strong theoretical background as well as hands-on experience in as many of the following areas as possible: 3D modeling, mechanism design especially haptic interface design and medical device design, FEA, electromechanical and mechatronic systems design and interfacing, advanced manufacturing and materials science, robotics especially kinematics/dynamics analysis and teleoperation control, system modeling and control, human-machine interaction, tissue modeling, virtual-reality simulation, pre-clinical data collection and statistical analysis, safety and risk analysis, Matlab, and C/C++ programming.

The start date is as soon as possible, but negotiable. If you are interested in being considered, please email the following documents in a single PDF file as soon as possible to me at <[hidden email]<mailto:[hidden email]>>:

(1) Your CV, including a brief (300-500 word) research statement

(2) Transcripts of previous university degrees (unofficial would be sufficient at this point)

(3) Summary (max. 1 page) of your practical experience with developing a device, robot, etc.

(3) Representative publications in electronic format

(4) The contact information of three individuals who can serve as references.

Following receipt of CVs, shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews. The interview will allow for further interaction and information regarding the research project. Interviews will start Sep 24, 2018 and continues until position is filled. Successful candidate is expected to have in-depth comprehensive knowledge in mechanical/electrical/computer engineering or computer science, good time management and writing skills, together with the ability to work effectively with other researchers. Competitive salaries will be offered to the successful candidates.
