Call for Participation for the AAAI-19 Workshop on Agile Robotics for Industrial Automation Competition (ARIAC) held at the Thirty-Third AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-19)

Workshop Topic

The Agile Robotics for Industrial Automation Competition (ARIAC) tests the agility of industrial robot systems, with the goal of enabling industrial robots on shop floors to be more productive, more autonomous, and require less time from shop floor workers. In this context, we define agility broadly to address: 1) Failure identification/recovery, where robot can detect failures in a manufacturing process and automatically recover; 2) Automated planning, to minimize/eliminate the up-front robot programming time when a new product is introduced; 3) Fixtureless environment, where robots can sense the environment and perform tasks on parts not in predefined locations; and 4) Plug-and-play robots, where robots from different manufacturers can be swapped in and out without the need for reprogramming.
The competition is a simulation-based contest designed to encourage robot agility research, as well as facilitate technology transfer. The competition has completed its second year and awarded over $17,000 worth of prize money to the winners. Over 50 teams registered for the competition. The objectives of the AAAI-19 workshop are: 1) Describe the overall goal of the competition, how it was implemented, and information about the teams that participated; 2) Describe the ARIAC simulation environments, challenges, and metrics; 3) Present results from the competition and associated findings; 4) Allow best performing teams to describe their approaches to address the challenges; 5) Allow opportunity for all teams to describe their approaches and get feedback, through poster presentations; 6) Describe lessons learned from the competition and get feedback from the participants; 7) Determine the direction for future competitions though presentations from industry and feedback from the community; and 8) Provide a forum for other teams to get involved.

Workshop Duration / Format

This Full Single Day workshop will be a mix of presentations from the participating teams, invited talks from Industry Representatives, and general discussion about the potential future direction of the Competition.
