A workshop in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (IEEE RO-MAN, 2018)

I. Aim and Scope

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a set of conditions hallmarked by three core impairments: restrictive repetitive behaviour, lack of social interaction skills, and atypical communication. Robot-based autism therapy is a fast growing area of research, with a variety of robots currently under development for future deployment in clinical settings. Presently, both researchers and therapists use their best judgment to gain insight of a robot’s performance during therapy. However, there are many unknowns to the utility – from both a practical and psychological perspective - of robots in this context. Thus, generating a detailed interpretation of this interaction through research could improve the clinical effectiveness of robots in this domain.

Previous research has shown that autistic individuals respond to robots that do not resemble real people. However, therapeutic interactions with robots should closely match the real world (e.g. similar to behavioural therapy), to have a meaningful and positive impact on patients. To date, the type of robot and therapies studied in this field vary greatly between researchers, making it difficult to draw conclusions about effective practice. This workshop will increase communication and knowledge exchange between like-minded researchers to tackle the challenges of robot based autism therapy.

The goal of this workshop is to enable a cross fertilization of ideas and solutions for the issues encountered by researchers while developing robotic agents for autism therapy. Similarly, through this workshop we aim to better understand the limitations of robotic agents, not only with respect to their construction, but also when they are placed in a clinical setting for therapeutic use.

II. Keynote Speakers

Dr. Ben Robins (University of Hertfordshire, UK)

Dr. Robins research interests include the use of toys for therapy with autistic children to develop socio-communicative skills, and more recently, the importance of play for developing a better understanding of the social and physical environment.

III. Submission

Submissions will be accepted both as full papers (up to 6 pages) and as extended abstracts (between 2-4 pages). Page limits do not include references.
