-- Tutorial Description --

This full-day tutorial introduces participants to theories and methods from
the social sciences that are useful for designing and evaluating socially
interactive robots. To assist people socially and physically, robots must be
able to understand and respond appropriately to human social behaviors, to
effectively employ social and communicative cues, and to be aware of and
responsive to different social norms and contexts. Furthermore, their
success depends on the users’ subjective experience and opinion, as well as
on objective metrics.  We describe relevant theories from the social
sciences that can guide robot design, useful methodological approaches
including ethnography for studying robots in the context of use and
experimental design for investigating specific mechanisms of social
interaction, and the development of computational models for translating
knowledge from social theory and empirical observations into robot
behavior.  The tutorial will include hands-on activities and lectures on
relevant theories of social behavior, methodologies for collecting empirical
data about social interaction, and ways to evaluate robots in real-world
social settings.
