participated by the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and
the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) that conducts research in
human-centered robotics and automatic control. The institute, is a key
player in the Spanish robotics and automatic control scenes, and a
valued participant in a large number of international collaborations
including more than ten ongoing H2020 projects and an ERC advanced
grant.Recently, is has been recognized as a Maria de Maeztu Excellence
Unit, the main accreditation given by the Spanish Government to research
units that stand out for the impact and international relevance of their
The PhD student will work on the project "ColRobTransp", whose main
objective is to advance in the design of new mobile robots that are
capable to transport products in the last mile of urban areas,
overcoming with the help of humans complex situations in navigation and
product delivery. Not only navigation in urban crowded areas is complex,
but also it is important how the robots overcome complex street
situations, for example, streets semi-blocked due to street repairing or
vehicles not well parked that do not allow to reach the delivery place.
The PhD Thesis will be directed by Prof. Alberto Sanfeliu.

The PhD student will work under the framework of the María de Maeztu
(MdM) Unit of Excellence Seal. The thesis project will consist of the
development of automatic control methodologies to improve the
performance and durability of PEM fuel cell systems, applied to mobile
social or healthcare robots as their main power supply. The objective of
the PhD student is to design new high-level and low-level control
systems that solve the main challenges to these types of energy
conversion devices: the increase of energy efficiency and of useful life
while outperforming the state of the art energy supply systems in terms
of energy density (autonomy).

*ABOUT THE POSITIONS:*
Both positions will be fully covered by an FPI grant with a duration of
4 years under the Spanish Government Call "Ayudas para contratos
predoctorales para la formación de doctores 2017".
The candidates are expected to start the first semester of 2018.
