2 full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh for the ORCA hub
The Edinburgh Centre for Robotics (ECR) at Computer Science in Heriot-Watt University, invites national and international applications for 2 full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates (Grade 7) in human-computer/robot interaction, including spoken dialogue and multimodal techniques, to join the flagship £31M EPSRC-funded Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) ORCA hub (Offshore Robotics for Certification of Assets). You will be joining a world-leading consortium of academics and researchers (including from Universities of Liverpool, Edinburgh, Oxford and Imperial College) with the potential for collaboration resulting in high-impact research publications.
The research programme of the hub will investigate intelligent interaction and interfaces including trust and explainable AI for autonomous systems. We will be designing multimodal interfaces for users who will be in high workload, high stakes environments, as well as techniques for human-machine teaming through natural language interaction.
We are looking for 2 full-time roles with an initial contract of 1 year, and with the possibility of renewal twice.
These specific roles include:
Post 1: Visualisation for HRI
Research into reactive, dynamic, multi-perspective visualisation and visual explanation of robot teams’ reasoning, planning, and sensing, in order to increase user confidence and minimise cognitive load.
Post 2: Human signal based HRI
Human-Computer Interaction with a focus on adaptation, exploring human behaviours and signals, i.e. closing the perception loop with the human (integrating sensors, e.g. eye trackers and other monitoring devices); understanding cognitive load and how to build trust in a human-machine teaming.
Expertise in Machine learning and User Centered Design is sought after. We expect strong technical skills, high level of academic writing, as well as, excellent communication and teamwork from any candidates to this position.
