Fellow position - Hardware developer for sensory assistive technologies

Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is looking for a fellow position (7 months duration), to be involved in an ongoing research project focused on prototypes of wearable sensory aids for persons with hearing disability. The contract may have an extension within a spin-off project of IIT.

The end goal of the project is to engineer lightweight, low-power prototypes by increasing their TRL (Technology Readiness Level), for possible industrial applications.

The selected candidate will:

• Design and maintain the current hardware setup, deciding which solutions are more suitable for the evolution of the prototypes
• Co-design the firmware specifications
• Implement specific audio codecs

The candidate will work in close collaboration with scientists of the Spatial Awareness and Multisensory Perception lab and engineers of the Electronic Design Lab.
Candidates should have a Degree in Electronic or Computer Science Engineering.

The following skills are required:

• Deep knowledge in embedded architectures based on DSP+ARM SOC (STM32).
• Experience with wireless communication protocols (Bluetooth 4.0, 5.0)
• Programming languages: C, C++ and scripting languages
• Strong knowledge in EDA tools (OrCad, Spice, Pads)
Experience with audio codecs (lossless and lossy, MPEG audio, ITU standards) will be a plus.

The research activities will mainly take place at IIT in Genoa, in the new laboratories at the Center for Human Technologies.

An internationally competitive salary, dependent on experience, will be offered.

Post doc position- Signal processing from array of sensors for augmented hearing

A 12-months postdoctoral position is available at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), Genoa, Italy.
The contract may have an extension within a spin-off project of IIT.

The use of the audio channel as complementary source of spatial information is widely known: the brain is able to decode binaural cues and segregate unwanted background noise. However, when the hearing system is weak, artificial systems can modify the spectrum for sounds to be better understood.

Array of sensors can also allow algorithms to artificially point to arbitrary sound sources thanks to beamforming algorithms. There is still a lack of research on how such systems can be integrated with the human hearing system to increase its capabilities, especially when sensory deficits occur.

The selected candidate will design acoustic beamforming algorithms specifically targeted on the human hearing system. He will study how the array architecture can be intertwined with perceptual needs.

The research will be carried out in collaboration with a team of engineers, psychologists and experts in the field of sensory disabilities.

The ideal candidate should have:

• a MSc Degree in Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
• a PhD in the fields of Signal Processing, Speech and Audio Processing
• strong skills in Probability, Statistics and Linear Algebra

He/she should also have published in the related field. Programming skills with software suites manipulating multidimensional data (Matlab, Python) is necessary. Additional skills in C, C++ are welcome.
