Position of Assistant Professor (with Tenure Track) of Robotics and Control at Sapienza

The Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering (DIAG) at Sapienza University of Rome
seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor of Robotics and Control, starting from January 1, 2019.

The position lasts 3 years and is linked to a tenured position (Italian code: RTD-B), according to the following procedure:
By the end of 2021, the successful applicant must have received a positive evaluation (habilitation) from the National Scientific Committee (ASN).
If this is the case, the position is then automatically converted into a tenured Associate Professorship.

Work environment

The DIAG department counts over 60 researchers in the areas of computer and systems science, operations research, and management engineering.
It was nominated in 2018 as one of 180 Departments of Excellence in Italy, receiving 8.6M€ of extra funding in the next five years by the Ministry of Research and Education.

Over the years, research has covered robot motion planning, kinematic/dynamic control of flexible, redundant, or underactuated robotic systems,
visual servoing, humanoid locomotion and navigation, control of locomotion platforms, and physical human-robot interaction.
The activities have been supported by the FP6, FP7, and H2020 European research projects PHRIENDS, CyberWalk, SAPHARI, COMANOID, and SYMPLEXITY,
for a total of about 2.4M€ of funding. DIAG is the home of the first Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics.
The Lab is equipped with three robotic manipulators (with the lightweight KUKA LWR-IV and UR10 arms), several NAOs and Kheperas,
2 quadrotors, 2 Geomatic haptic interfaces, a Cyberith locomotion interface, plus Kinects, stereocameras, F/T sensors etc.
DIAG hosts also two other labs involved with AI and cognitive robotics (RoCoCo and ALCOR), with further personnel and equipments.

The department offers bachelor, master, and PhD degrees in the above areas, with a total of 500+ undergraduate and about 350 graduate students/year.

where courses in robotics and control are offered. Both two-year programs are taught in English, with 50% of international students.

Tasks

The successful applicant should work in the broad area of planning and control methods for robotic systems,
doing both research and teaching at the Bachelor and/or Master level (between 72 h and 120h of lectures (8 to 12 credits in total) per year).
In addition, co-supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD theses is possible.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Doctoral degree in robotics, automatic control, or a related field;
2. A minimum of three years of post-doctoral experience;
3. Pertinent scientific achievements beyond the dissertation/PhD thesis;
4. Research experience in the area of planning and control of robotic systems;
5. Relevant publications in leading international journals and conference proceedings.

We highly appreciate also:

- Autonomy in conducting laboratory experiments;
- Experience in the acquisition and/or scientific management of research projects;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English;
- Team and communication skills.

The position of interest is at p. 64, scientific sector (SSD) ING-INF/04 Automatica.
