Candidates with exceptional background and experience may be considered at a higher rank.
Candidates must have an established record of published research, must exhibit strong potential for extramural funding within their area of expertise, and are expected to develop a vigorous research program. Candidates must also be qualified to teach courses in the core curriculum of an undergraduate mechanical engineering program, and to teach existing courses or develop new courses that support the Robotics Track. The Robotics Track is a joint graduate program between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Computing. Graduate students can pursue M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the Robotics Track, while undergraduates may elect to pursue an emphasis in Robotics. The Robotics Center is a collaborative environment with shared facilities and equipment, and with active collaborations with the medical school and local industry. The Department of Mechanical Engineering currently has 38 tenure-line faculty members, over 1000 undergraduate and 245 graduate students. With funding from the state's Engineering Initiative, the Department expects to hire up to nine additional faculty members over the next three years.
