The Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications for
tenure-track positions. We are strongly committed to all members of our

We have multiple positions open to candidates from a broad range of
engineering backgrounds:

 • General Call: Consistent with the current breadth of departmental
research, we welcome applicants with expertise across a wide variety of
research areas related to mechanical engineering broadly defined and the
ability to contribute synergistically to research activities in the
department and university at large.

 • Targeted and Cross-Cutting Domains: We welcome applicants looking to
address emerging challenges in particular fields both within and outside
the traditional scope of mechanical engineering. These include dynamics and
controls, advanced manufacturing, and fluid mechanics, as well
cross-cutting efforts to integrate mechanical engineering disciplines with
soft and bio-inspired robotics, human-machine interaction, medicine and
medical technologies, machine learning, and data sciences.

Teaching: You are expected to contribute to teaching our core undergraduate
courses, electives, and graduate courses. Tenure-track faculty carry a
moderate teaching load that allows time for quality research and close
involvement with students. We expect you to establish and grow a strong
research program, contribute to our teaching mission, and show your real
passion for mentoring and advising students.

Eligibility: We are seeking individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant
discipline and have demonstrated dedication to our core values: scientific
truth, creativity, quality, innovation, and engineering solutions. Faculty
positions are primarily at the Assistant Professor level; however,
appointments may be made at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
depending on your qualifications.

Instructions to Apply: You should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae,
and contact information for at least three professional references. Your
application will also include three statements:

 • a research statement, typically on the order of five pages, outlines a
compelling vision for a research program that ultimately goes beyond your
prior (typically PhD or post-doc) experience. Your statement should include
initial research projects that can be immediately pursued with graduate
students, given your current expertise, and for which external funding can
realistically be sought. Statements also should include a longer-term
vision, with more far-reaching plans, and may reference potential
collaborators in the department and elsewhere at CMU.

• a teaching statement outlines both your experience and philosophy, as
well as a list of courses you are interested in teaching.

• a diversity statement outlines how you have contributed to, or plan to
contribute to, diversity, inclusion, and equity.

by November 1 will be given full consideration; we encourage you to submit
