The Advanced Robotics Research Line of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking four highly motivated, full-time post-docs in the area of medical robotics.

The positions are linked to the Robotic Microsurgery translational project of ADVRÂ’s Biomedical Robotics Laboratory (BRL). This project aims to refine, enhance and validate promising medical device prototypes developed by BRLÂ’s research team. The final objective is to develop advanced device prototypes to enable clinical trials with the new technologies. This will allow their introduction into medical practice, leading to significantly enhanced health outcomes. Details on the positions are provided below.

The successful candidates will be offered a fixed-term contract (24 months) with a highly competitive salary commensurable with qualifications and experience.

1. Post-Doc in Mechatronics for Robot-Assisted Laser Microsurgery
---------------------------------------------
We are looking to appoint a skilled and enthusiastic mechatronics engineer with experience on the design, development and assessment of precision surgical robotic systems for microsurgery applications. The candidate should possess a PhD degree in mechatronics, robotics or related field and an excellent publication record related to robotic science and engineering (ideally in the area of surgical robotics).

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and contribute both to the improvement of existing prototypes and the creation of novel systems, being able to pursue his/her own creative ideas towards robotic systems for high-precision, high-quality laser microsurgeries. This is a major area of research at BRL, one which includes close collaboration with top surgeons and surgical device companies. Currently the group is developing robotic technologies for free-beam and for endoscopic laser surgery. Both applications offer a vast number of research topics that can be explored, including in mechatronics, surgical automation, micro-robotics, MOEMS and surgeon-robot interfaces.

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered a plus: Robotics, laser surgery, robotic microsurgery, endoscopic systems, medical devices, clinical trials.

2. Post-Doc in Mechatronics for Needle-based Diagnosis and Robot-Assisted Therapy

We are looking to appoint a skilled and enthusiastic mechatronics engineer with experience on the design, development and assessment of systems for disease diagnosis and/or therapy. The candidate should possess a PhD degree in mechatronics, robotics or related field and an excellent publication record related to robotic science and engineering (ideally in the area of needle-based robotic procedures).

The selected candidate will contribute both to the improvement of existing prototypes towards clinical trials and to creation of novel systems, being able to pursue his/her own creative ideas.

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered a plus: Robotics, needle-based medical devices, real-time tumor detection, intravenous catheterization, clinical trials.

3. Post-Doc in Sensing and Automation in Robotic Surgery

We are looking to appoint a skilled and enthusiastic engineer with experience on the design, development and assessment of sensing and automation systems for biomedical applications. The candidate should possess a PhD degree in medical robotics or related field and an excellent publication record.

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary team and contribute to the development of novel sensing technologies and autonomous behaviors in the area of robotic laser surgery. A number of research topics that can be explored in this area, including in real-time tumor detection, surgical planning, surgical automation, micro-robotics and laser-tissue interaction.

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered a plus: Robotics, laser systems, tumor detection, planning and automation in robotic surgery, medical devices, clinical trials.

4. Post-Doc in Real-Time Medical Image Analysis

We are looking to appoint a skilled and enthusiastic computer scientist or engineer with experience on the design, development and evaluation of computer vision algorithms for pattern analysis and recognition. The candidate should possess a PhD degree in computer science, robotics or related field and an excellent publication record.

The selected candidate will contribute to the development of novel vision algorithms for pattern recognition, tracking and registration in real-time endoscopic images, primarily in the context of otolaryngology.

Research topics that can be explored in this area include, for example, real-time tumor detection, surgical planning, surgical automation, shared-control, and augmented reality.

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered a plus: Medical image processing, pattern analysis and recognition, tracking, registration, real-time applications, FPGA, clinical trials.
