[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Ph.D. Student – Stiffness Controllable Soft Robots

Godage, Isuru
Ph.D. Student – Stiffness Controllable Soft Robots
Applications are invited for a Ph.D. position in research of Stiffness Controllable Soft Robots. The positions are with the School of Computing at the DePaul University, Chicago, and the student will work under the supervision of Dr. Isuru Godage. The research involves mathematical modeling of deformable systems, numerical optimization, CAD design, fabrication, and experimental validation of soft robotic systems.

This project will establish a computational framework for the design of stiffness controllable soft robotic systems as per user specifications. The framework is based on both simulation studies and experimental data of various soft robotic structures having different combinations of actuation technologies and arrangement thereof. The student is expected to occasionally visit partner-institutes in Nashville, TN and Clemson, SC for collaboration and travel to international and local conferences/meetings to present the research progress. The results of this work will be disseminated to soft robotic research community and public through software libraries/web interfaces.

Students from all majors relevant to Mechanical and Electrical Engineering are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students with strong background in mathematical modeling, robotic system design and experimentation, control systems, CAD design, system optimization. Good communication skills (written and oral) are essential.

The assistantship includes a tuition and a biweekly graduate student stipend. Review of submissions will begin immediately. Interested students are strongly encouraged to apply early, as the hire of successful candidates will take place on the first-come-first-served basis. The desired start date is March 2018.

To Apply:

Please email, as a single PDF document: (i) a cover letter (clearly indicating expected start date, relevant experience, and motivation); (ii) detailed Curriculum Vita; (iii) copies of transcripts; and, (iv) copies of relevant publications (if any) to Dr. Isuru Godage.
Only shortlisted applicants will be directed to apply to the College of Computer and Digital Media at DePaul University.
