Robotic technology has been successfully used in repetitive manufacturing by large enterprises for decades. The opportunity for future advanced manufacturing is to use robotic vision systems and software user interfaces to reduce the integration time between design and custom manufacturing processes enabling SMEs to engage with the technology for competitive advantage.
Design robotics is the application of existing robotics technologies to design-led manufacturing. Design robotics will allow Australian SMEs to increase value differentiation through specialised manufacture of high-value products, but requires advances in software and sensing systems.
The project will be conducted in collaboration with industry partner Urban Art Projects (UAP), Brisbane. Students with an interest in any of the following areas of design research are strongly encouraged to apply:
- vision for robotics and automation,
- learning and adaptive systems,
- robust vision,
- real time vision,
- vision and action.
Your PhD will explore how design robotics will inform the advancement of design-led manufacturing in an applied industry context. The PhD will investigate and implement robotic vision solutions to make robots more useful for mass customisation manufacturing.
UAP will offer contexts for investigation, participation in the research and a 'living lab' partial placement within UAP for the successful applicant. The scholarship will be supervised by Prof Jonathan Roberts (Robotics), project leader Dr Jared Donovan (Interaction Design), and Dr Glenda Caldwell (Architecture).

Applicants can be Australian or international students that have first-class honours (H1) or equivalent.
