[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Post-Doc Opening in Novel Reconfigurable Robot-End Effector Project

Ferdinando Cannella
The Advanced Industrial Automation Lab within the Department of Advanced Robotics (ADVR) at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), an English-speaking research Institute, is looking for a highly motivated, full-time postdoctoral researcher to work in the area of Robotics for Industrial Application for 1-year contract (renewable upon the results accomplished).

The successful candidate will work on the design and development of a novel reconfigurable robot end effector to be applied in an innovative robotic soft materials handling system. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Research and Development department of a worldwide leader in automated packaging machines.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented candidate to work in the analysis, evaluation and design of dexterous gripper for handling and manipulation of parts in different industrial settings. This outstanding scientist should have a PhD in engineering, robotics, or other scientific fields.

The successful candidate will mainly focus on the analysis, evaluation and design of a dexterous/ reconfigurable gripper allowing the manipulation of different parts, fostering efficient multi-variant production, demonstrating highly dexterous behaviour.

The scientist will work in a multidisciplinary team including roboticists, electronic and mechanical designers, and industrial researchers.

Field studies (industrial automation, packaging, etc.) will be an integral part of the work, serving both to refine system specifications and to assess new technologies.

The research will advance the state of the art in manipulation enabling greatly enhanced industry production during the packaging process.

The position includes hands-on and theoretical research.

Desired qualifications/skills:

  *   PhD degree in Engineering or in a scientific area (Control Systems, Mechatronics, Robotics, Electronics, or equivalent)
  *   High quality publication record
  *   Experience in working in multidisciplinary teams
  *   Strong communication and English language skills (written and spoken)

Experience in the following would be ideal:

  *   Integration of embedded systems, design and testing of custom electronics, sensors, microcontrollers, firmware, etc.
  *   Design and implementation of controls
  *   Reconfigurable mechanisms and robot end effectors (grippers or hands in particular)
  *   Industrial Robotics (direct and indirect kinematics and dynamics, handling, etc.)
  *   Creativity and a proactive attitude.
  *   Independent yet strong team player

Experience in the following would be useful, but not essential:

  *   Industrial robotics and automation
  *   Familiarity with robotics, measurements and automation software (e.g. ROS 1, Linux based, C4G Open controller, PLC, Labview)

The salary will depend on qualifications and experience and will include additional health benefits.

Interested applicants should submit in electronic form (1) their CV outlining experience and qualifications, (2) list of publications, (3) their best first-author paper, (4) a cover letter outlining motivation and statement of research interests and (5) names of 2 referees to [hidden email]<mailto:[hidden email]>, stating "FRU-PostDocControl BC: 72721" in the subject of the e-mail.
