[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Postdoc Opportunity for Drone Startup Project at New York University

Frank J Vallese
Dear Colleagues,

New York University has an immediate opening for an electrical engineering
postdoc to take the lead technical role in a unique startup-focused project
being started at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. The ideal candidate has
a solid electronics design skills and experience working with drones and
sensors. The project involves developing and commercializing technology
originally developed by the US Army Research Lab. The technology is based
on the development of a 3D electromagnetic sensor module used to detect
power line emissions from an airborne drone. Algorithms will need to be
developed and programmed into an onboard processor to estimate the power
line position with respect to the drone and estimate power-flow/voltage
levels. Applications include collision avoidance for drones to
significantly reduce collisions, power line tracking for autonomous
inspection drones and as an ad hoc power line measurement tool for refined
grid management.

The position begins as an NYU postdoctoral/research associate that is
funded for up to one year to perform research, design electronic
prototypes, develop algorithms, acquire data and produce a minimum viable
product/prototype. The research will be performed in NYU’s Smart Energy
Research Group with Dr. Yury Dvorkin as Faculty Research Advisor. If
successful, the program will facilitate the creation of a startup to
further develop and proliferate the technology.

   - Education: Ph.D. in engineering, science or a technology-focused
   discipline (other strong candidates may be considered);
   - Experience with electronics design, drone subsystems, and sensors;
   - Knowledge of electromagnetic fields a plus but not required;
   - Experience with startups and entrepreneurial activities;
   - Interest in the commercialization of technology;
   - Excellent communication, organizational and project management skills;
   - Candidate must qualify for US work authorization (e.g. US citizens,
