[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Postdoc Position in Robotics at University College London

Carlson, Tom
Postdoc Position in Robotics at University College London

(Job reference: 1685656)

Available for immediate start, initially funded until 31 March 2021
Application Deadline: 20th November 2017

This post is part of a large collaborative project called “Assistive Devices for empowering disAbled People through robotic Technologies” (ADAPT). The ADAPT project is funded by the European INTERREG VA FCE program and comprises a total of 16 partners equally distributed between France and the United Kingdom.

Ageing societies and chronic disabilities are irrevocable trends in the EU, which usually result in a loss of autonomy and a breakdown of social relations. In some cases, the use of an Electrical Powered Wheelchair (EPW) is the only way to provide autonomy and improve social inclusion. At present many people with complex disabilities face increased isolation due to loss of independent mobility because of difficulties of getting assessed for provision of an EPW and the availability of an appropriate EPW. Therefore, this project has 4 key aims:

1.        Develop a smart electrically powered wheelchair;
2.        Develop a corresponding powered wheelchair training simulator;
3.        Train healthcare professionals in this novel assistive technology;
4.        Pave the way towards production and market adoption of the developed assistive technology.

As such the consortium includes a range of universities/research institutes; hospitals; companies and charities.

The postdoc at UCL will be managed by Dr Tom Carlson and will be housed in the Aspire Centre for Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__ucl.ac.uk_aspire-2Dcreate&d=DwIGaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=CB1kPxDSZVI_PPpjWZ3B7Q54ESU2WBqQL3zToByTL64&s=TVUxd5P-H20GfmugYIYTTJ4LjiaP5_qz0W1CmN7dTDU&e=). Aspire Create is physically located on the UCL Stanmore campus and is integrated into the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and the Aspire Charity, which gives us unprecedented access to clinicians, patients and assistive technology providers.

UCL’s main responsibilities within the project are in the development and testing of the shared control algorithms that will provide appropriate amounts of assistance to the user when driving the EPW in typical activities of daily living. The postdoc will contribute to the co-design of both the wheelchair and the corresponding simulator platform, in close collaboration with several consortium partners.
