The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leuven invites applications  for a postdoctoral position in the area of robotic micro-surgery.

We seek outstanding postdoctoral applicants to strengthen this expanding research group. A fully-funded position starting between November 2018 and January 2019 for the duration of one year, with possible extension, is available. We are looking for goal-oriented candidates with proven experience in mechanical design and control of surgical robots and advanced instrumentation. Candidates in the possession of a PhD in engineering on topics such as surgical robotics, medical image processing, design of medical devices, human-robot interaction, mechatronics or general robotics can apply.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the work on robotic micro-surgery, both in ophthalmological, ENT or skull-base surgery and tackle both hard and software challenges. He/she will support PhD students active in these fields and will get the opportunity to identify new contributions in the respective fields. The successful candidate will have a large responsibility for these particular projects, but is also expected to pro-actively engage and collaborate with parallel activities in the research group.

The group has coordinated several collaborative EU-projects such as SCATh and CASCADE project on robotic catheterization, EurEyeCase on robotic eye-surgery. Through the GIFT-SURG project (Wellcome Trust / EPSRC funded) we have gained experience in fetal surgery where we work closely with University Colleg
 e London and King's College London. Other active research lines include amongst others bilateral teleoperation, haptics, shared control, bio-mechanical tissue modelling, real-time FEM, human intention recognition, surgical training and robotic laser surgery.
