[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Postdoc position - Surgical Robotics - University of Leuven, Belgium

Emmanuel Vander Poorten-2
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leuven invites applications  for a postdoctoral position in the area of robotic micro-surgery.

Recruitment starts immediately and runs until a suited candidate is found.

Application can be done online via  https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.kuleuven.be_personeel_jobsite_jobs_54871598&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=RCxpQdLu1hp0GNans7IkGmnCCCeTrOsbhxCsDa_9GuY&s=B6mSUgssSKYNVOBQNOr_KQp2DB93zZOv-r8IEdOXswI&e=

We seek outstanding postdoctoral applicants to strengthen this expanding research group. A fully-funded position starting between November 2018 and January 2019 for the duration of one year, with possible extension, is available. We are looking for goal-oriented candidates with proven experience in mechanical design and control of surgical robots and advanced instrumentation. Candidates in the possession of a PhD in engineering on topics such as surgical robotics, medical image processing, design of medical devices, human-robot interaction, mechatronics or general robotics can apply.

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the work on robotic micro-surgery, both in ophthalmological, ENT or skull-base surgery and tackle both hard and software challenges. He/she will support PhD students active in these fields and will get the opportunity to identify new contributions in the respective fields. The successful candidate will have a large responsibility for these particular projects, but is also expected to pro-actively engage and collaborate with parallel activities in the research group.

The robot-assisted surgery group (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.mech.kuleuven.be_en_pma_research_ras&d=DwIFAg&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=RCxpQdLu1hp0GNans7IkGmnCCCeTrOsbhxCsDa_9GuY&s=8qSgMSt3sTQIN7fxG8FYp2olmppUa66eSMcjAN6uq9M&e=) is an international,  growing, dynamic and multi-disciplinary research group consisting of members of PMA (Production Engineering, Machine building and Automation) and BMe (BioMechanical Engineering),  which maintains tight and multiple collaborations with UZ Leuven, the largest university hospital in Belgium, located at 10 minutes ride (bicycle) of the department. The group has coordinated several collaborative EU-projects such as SCATh and CASCADE project on robotic catheterization, EurEyeCase on robotic eye-surgery. Through the GIFT-SURG project (Wellcome Trust / EPSRC funded) we have gained experience in fetal surgery where we work closely with University Colleg
e London and King's College London. Other active research lines include amongst others bilateral teleoperation, haptics, shared control, bio-mechanical tissue modelling, real-time FEM, human intention recognition, surgical training and robotic laser surgery.
Applications should contain a C.V., a cover letter describing research interests and goals, a full list of publications, copies of up to three relevant papers, and names and contact information for at least three references (expected to provide letters of recommendation).

Application procedure:
