Research Objective


The PIKAFLEX and Arès projects are aimed to develop intelligent grasping robots endowed with vision and learning capabilities for the specific task of picking and kitting. State of the art approach is currently deep learning-based and requires a huge number of labeled data which is very expensive to obtain. In this research project, we aim to simulate scene data along with grasping robots and make them realistic through generative adversarial network (GAN). Interested candidates are invited to read our recent publication at IROS 2018 on the Jacquard dataset for further details. Profile


We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow in the field of data simulation, infographics, machine learning and robotics. Curiosity, open-mind, creativity, persistence, and collaborative-work ability are the key personal skills we target. A Ph.D. in master of engineering, applied mathematics or computer science is required, with demonstrated experience and a high quality publication record on one or several of the following topics:

    * data simulation
    * computer graphics and physics engine
    * machine learning and computer vision



The successful candidate should have advanced programming skills (Python, C/C++, Matlab) with experience. A solid background in data simulation, computer graphics, and machine learning is required (with strong background in mathematics). Knowledge on general simulation tools, e.g., Unity 3D, Blender, pyBullet, is definitively an advantage, as well as experience with simulation for robotics (e.g. Gazebo, V-Rep) and the physics properties of the simulation (e.g. deformable objects). While fluency in French is not required, fluency in English is mandatory. Both beginning and more senior postdoctoral candidates are encouraged to apply. Environment


The successful candidate will work in direct collaboration with researchers having an established expertise in computer vision and machine learning in partnership with a major industrial company in robotics and a world leading car maker. Ecole Centrale de Lyon is part of the top ten engineering schools in France (Grande Ecoles), part of the elite of "Grande Écoles" offering access to excellent quality graduate and undergraduate students.

The LIRIS lab is a large CNRS supported laboratory federating research groups in computer science from 4 universities in Lyon, namely Université Claude Bernard, Université Lumières, INSA de Lyon and Ecole Centrale de Lyon. It offers a unique environment where innovative, multidisciplinary, foundational and applied research is conducted on topics ranging from management of data, knowledge and services, to image processing and analysis, modeling, simulation and rendering.
