The Language of Surgery group at The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join our team to develop new data analytics for assessment of surgical skill and competence, and their association with patient outcomes for nasal septoplasty. Our NIH funded project is currently acquiring data from six operating rooms across three hospitals. The dataset includes surgical tool motion, video, depth maps, surgeons’ surveys, and patient outcomes. Our major technical goal is to develop automated methods to objectively assess 1) surgeons’ skill; 2) surgeons’ competency; and 3) case difficulty. These analytics will eventually deliver a standardized platform for assessment and coaching for residents learning this surgery.

 The ideal candidate should have:


    - a strong background in machine learning, signal processing, and methods for analysis of time-series data;

    - knowledge of and/or experience with computer vision techniques;

    - programming expertise in C++, Python, Matlab, and HTML;

    - interest and/or experience in working with healthcare problems (particularly surgical procedures);

    -  demonstrated skill in scientific writing;

    -  excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons and engineers.

Experience with healthcare data and building real-world systems is a plus.

In addition to project-specific work, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate level, and may initiate and pursue research on supplemental ideas in collaboration with faculties aligned with their interests.
