[robotics-worldwide] [jobs] Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Machine Learning at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory

Garrett Warnell
Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Machine Learning
U.S. Army Research Laboratory
Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD USA

Description: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks applications for
a postdoctoral research scientist to support a program in human-in-the-loop
machine learning. Candidates in this role are expected to be recognized
experts in their identified research area, in fields such as reinforcement
learning or machine learning. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest
in developing novel methodologies for machine learning and adaptation in
highly heterogeneous environments where humans work cooperatively with
intelligent systems. Given recent advances in reinforcement learning, ARL
wants to leverage human interaction and transfer learning to extend these
approaches beyond software games to embodied agents working cooperatively
with humans in complex, dynamic real-world environments.

The candidate will be expected to lead their own research efforts but work
within a highly collaborative research group; publish first author efforts
in peer reviewed literature; and contribute technically to peer reviewed
literature in diverse areas within and outside of the team. This position
will require a mastery of various machine learning techniques such as
supervised, transfer, and reinforcement learning. The candidate will be
expected to develop and implement algorithms in Python and/or C/C++.

Due to the nature of the position, U.S. Citizenship is required. The
candidate must be able to pass a background check.

Desired Skills and Knowledge:
*PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering,
neuroscience or a related field with significant experience with machine
*Good communication and presentation skills, and a demonstrated track
record of peer-reviewed publication
*3+ years of experience in Python and/or C/C++ and other scientific
libraries specifically geared towards machine learning, such as
*Fluency in Linux and Windows development environments, proficiency
with integrated development environments, revision management systems such
as Git/SVN, and other tools for building large applications
*Ability to generate technical documentation of results and software

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a resume, a cover letter,
and a list of 3-5 references to:
