“Intelligent Vehicles/Mobile Robots”, Halmstad University, Sweden*

A full-time employment for one year, with starting date as soon as possible.

The research will focus on situation-aware autonomous self-driving
vehicles. The successful candidate will work on developing  AI algorithms
and methods based on signal processing and machine learning to recognize,
describe, and reason about agents (e.g. humans) and objects (e.g.
obstacles) in the environment. The research will heavily investigate
end-to-end situation-aware perception modules, which can understand actions
of other agents and identify objects in the surroundings. This entails the
development of novel algorithms and methods for extracting and combining
information (considering uncertainty) coming from various sensory
modalities (installed on the vehicle, mobile robot or in the
infrastructure).

*Principal duties*

The candidate will carry out the research within a project named
“Situation-Aware Safety System”. It’s a collaboration project with our
industrial partners Kollmorgen, Toyota Material Handling Europe, and AB
Volvo (Volvo Technology). The focus is on the next generation safety system
that is able to handle complex scenarios with functions for tracking and
predicting actions of other agents and objects in the environment and
modeling their behavior with the goal of the safe and efficient operation.
The work also includes demonstrations of the developed algorithms and
methods. The position might involve some minor teaching activities on basic
levels.

*Research environment*

The position is funded by CAISR (Center for Applied Intelligent Systems
Research), which is a long-term research program on intelligent systems at
the School of Information Technology in Halmstad University. The focus of
the center is on aware intelligent computer systems that are human-aware,
situation-aware and to some extent “self-aware". This means systems that
can communicate with humans, systems that can be aware of human intentions,
systems that can fuse information and be aware of the situation and not
just individual sensor readings, and systems that can be self-moni­toring.
The subject expertizes in the center are in machine learning, data mining,

*Qualification*

The position is intended for someone with a PhD in Computer
Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related
disciplines, preferably with the application area in self-driving vehicles
or AGVs. Desirable skills include experiences in driver intention/behavior
modeling, perception (in particular lidar and camera), advanced signal
processing and machine learning methods on real-world data. Profound
knowledge in deep learning is meritorious. The applicant shall have a
strong background in programming and experience in Robot Operating System
(ROS). One post-doc experience after PhD is admirable.  The initial term of
appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on
satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
