The University of Bristol and Bristol Robotics Laboratory invites
applications from talented postdoctoral researchers for an immediate
position in the area of Tactile Robotic Hands.

The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team on
the new Leverhulme Leadership Award ‘A biomimetic forebrain for robot
touch’. £1M has been allocated to a 5-year project that will apply
leading robotics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, psychology
and philosophy of the brain to develop a biomimetic forebrain embodied
with a 3D-printed tactile robot hand to enable human-like tactile
dexterity.

The successful applicant will design and build novel 3D-printed
dexterous tactile robotic hands that will perceive, explore and
manipulate their environment. The post-holder will be supported by a
laboratory technician and work with three other postdoctoral
researchers who will develop artificial intelligence methods for
active touch and link the progress to a model of the mammalian
forebrain involved in active touch in animals.

The project will be based at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory
(www.brl.ac.uk) the largest centre for multi-disciplinary robotics
research in the UK.

You will hold (or will be expected to obtain soon) a strong PhD and
good publication record in a discipline relevant to the project. In
addition to a strong research track record you will also have
excellent communication and presentation skills.

Interviews will take place in April 2017, with the anticipated start
as soon as possible thereafter. This post is full time, with initial
funding for 2 years which can be extended for a further 3 years.

The Tactile Robotics group comprises 8 current members and is well
equipped with robot arms, tactile sensors/hands, and access to
workshops and 3d-printing facilities at BRL. The group is due to grow
significantly under the investment from the Leverhulme Trust in both
personnel and equipment.

An open source 3d-printed tactile sensor developed at Bristol Robotics
Laboratory recently won first prize in the Harvard soft robotics
competition
