The University of Lincoln is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research
Fellow. The successful candidate will be employed as part of the Mushroom
Robo-Pict project, which will develop an automated robotic picking system
for fresh mushroom crops. It addresses a key threat to the long-term future
of the £120m UK mushroom industry arising from reduced labour availability.
Picking labour current accounts for ca. 1/3 of production costs and this
could all be removed through robotic harvesting. Previous work, across
global centres, has hitherto failed to develop a fully robotic mushroom

This project is a collaboration between Littleport Mushrooms, one of the
UK’s largest producers of mushrooms, Stelram Ltd, a leading robotic
integration company and ABB the worlds largest producer of industrial
robots. It addresses a core challenge of developing robotic systems to pick
fresh fruit and vegetables. The need to develop robotic approaches to pick
fresh produce is global. It reflects changes in demographics (fewer younger
people are entering the agricultural community whilst global food demand is
ever expanding) and changes in national inward migration policies that may
impact labour availability.

We are looking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow specialised in the

   1. An understanding of 3D reconstruction from camera images and depth
   2. Experience detecting and tracking objects in 3D space.
   3. Experience classifying objects, matching templates, or using other
   machine learning methods.
   4. An understanding of graph optimisation
   5. Experience implementing and verifying real-time monocular and/or
   multi-camera computer vision systems

Applicants should have, or expect to soon obtain, a PhD (or equivalent) in
a relevant area. You must have excellent mathematical and coding skills
(C++/Python, ROS). The Research Fellowship offers the opportunity to engage
in international collaboration within an ambitious team, to work with
state-of-the-art computer vision, robotic hardware and software, and to
benefit from excellent support to produce and disseminate original research
contributions in the leading international conferences and journals.

The successful candidate will contribute to the University's ambition to
achieve international recognition as a research-intensive institution and
will be expected to design, conduct and manage original research in the
above subject areas as well contribute to the wider activities of Lincoln
School of Computer Science. Evidence of authorship of research outputs of
international standing is essential, as is the ability to work
collaboratively as part of a team, including excellent written and spoken
