WPI’s Chemical Engineering Department, with 17 faculty, 400+ undergraduate and 50+ graduate students, is ranked number 6 (out of 150) in the nation by College Factual – USA Today, with cutting-edge and growing research programs in molecular bioengineering, sustainability, functional materials and catalysis.
WPI’s Robotics Engineering (RBE) Program is the first in the nation and in the world to offer BS through PhD degrees in robotics. The RBE Program, with 38 core and affiliated faculty, 370 undergraduates and 170 graduate students, was awarded the inaugural ABET Innovation Award for its truly interdisciplinary, project-based, curriculum that integrates a variety of disciplines including Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
Our combined collegial and diverse faculty work collaboratively in providing exceptional teaching and mentoring in the context of progressive interdisciplinary research to solve some of the most complex societal problems. With research funding from the NSF, NIH, AFRL, ONR, DARPA, NASA, DOE and industry, we offer an incredibly vibrant environment for faculty and students alike. The Chemical Engineering department is housed in state-of-the-art facilities located at both Goddard Laboratories and the interdisciplinary WPI Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park. Robotics laboratories comprise a number of different platforms including the new PracticePoint, a soon-to-be completed healthcare robotics R&D facility designed to promote collaboration between WPI faculty, the medical robotics and cyber-physical systems industry, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

WPI expects faculty to be involved in a balance of research, teaching and service activities, including mentoring student projects at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels.
