Collaborative robotics is a major trend in robot technology that enables
solutions where the operator directly accesses and interacts with the
robot, as opposed to traditional safeguarding where the access to the
robot system is prevented in operational conditions. Interaction with
access to the workspace clearly requires safety principles to be
implemented, like specific power/energy-limited robots or adding sensors
and control layers to regular industrial robot systems.
In order to have effective transfer of the scientific researches in the
field of collaborative robotics and human-robot interaction to the
industrial level, it is necessary to carefully and intensely explore the
impact of control/device technology on operational and functional
safety. This special issue addresses novel improvements and
opportunities in control, machine technology, planning and perception to
create robotic systems that can safely operate with the human operator
in industrial applications. In particular, the special issue aims at
presenting real industrial use cases based on the interaction between
the operator and the user where the reduction of the risks that is
obtained by exploiting the new techniques/technologies is clearly shown.

Topics include, but are not limited to:
•    Safe collaborative robotics in industrial applications
•    Risk assessment when bringing collaborative robotics in industry
•    Operators involvement in safe human-robot interaction
•    Regulation compliance for safety in collaborative robotics
•    Validation of human-robot interaction systems
•    Robot capabilities for self-assessment of safety measures
•    Estimation of probabilities and models of unintended behaviors by
either robots or humans
•    Toolchains for modelling and assessing safety of robots and of
•    Downgraded execution modes, self-healing systems and contingency
planning in safety

All contributions are expected to provide extended versions of reference
case histories.
