Unmanned robotic systems have been foreseen as emerging techniques and
vehicles for wide applications in the fields of aerospace, ground, surface,
and underwater. Recently, resulting from the spread of the COVID-19
pandemic, grounded and aerial mobile robots have demonstrated their extreme
significance for smart containment, factory automation, goods delivery,
hospital management, and socially assistive robots. Additionally, mobile
robots also play an important role in accomplishing tasks in hazardous
environments, such as radioactive plants, outer spaces, volcanos, and deep
sea. The main objective of this Special Section is to present perspectives
and recent, promising, research results and applications of different
robotics technologies for grounded and aerial unmanned robots. In fact,
legged, wheeled, and aerial mobile robotics, with the development of
advanced technology, will become more and more preeminent in the future for
not only the manufacturing process but also in human’s daily life. For this
reason, the design, implementation, modeling, control, and optimization of
unmanned mobile robots have become urgent issues.
