[robotics-worldwide] [meetings] ISTC-Sponsored Intelligent Systems Workshop (July 26-27)

Catharine McGhan
Dear Colleagues,

The AIAA Intelligent Systems Technical Committee (ISTC) and the Workshop
Organizing Committee invite you to participate in the 2017 Intelligent
Systems Workshop, which will be held 26-27 July 2017 at the University
of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  This meeting will gather together private
sector, government, and academic interests whose research and
development work supports interdisciplinary applications of intelligent
systems.  Registration is still open.

Join experts in the field as we convene to present and discuss autonomy
and cognitive assistance capabilities in a format aiming to
cross-pollinate ideas across different cultures and domains.
Presentations and panel sessions will include examples of private
sector, government, and academic projects and applications that focus on
evolving and emerging Aerospace and Autonomous Systems applications.
The workshop will build on momentum created during the 2014 workshop in
Dayton, OH, the 2015 workshop at NASA Ames, and the 2016 workshop at
NASA Langley.  In addition to exchange of ideas, an output of the
workshop will be topics for updating the ISTC roadmap and ideas for new
collaborations, invited sessions, and future workshops and tutorials.

This year’s ISTC Workshop will be organized into four half-day sessions,
each containing keynote presentations, a panel discussion, and a
breakout session to ensure all attendees are able to share ideas.  Four
topics will be covered over the two-day workshop:

* Self-Driving Cars - Keynote speaker will be John Leonard (Vice
President of Toyota Research Institute). Panelists from General Motors,
U.S. Army TARDEC, Mathworks, and University of Michigan will discuss
technologies and visions for self-driving cars.

*Cognitive Assistance - Keynote speakers include Lazaros Polymenakos
(IBM Watson) and Dr. Nadine Sarter (Director of the Center for
Ergonomics at University of Michigan). Panelists from IBM, MITRE,
MyCroft, and Soartech will discuss key technologies and issues with
cognitive assistance in commercial and consumer sectors.

* Space Robotics - Keynote speaker will be Glen Henshaw (NRL). Panelists
from NASA Johnson Space Center, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center,
Stanford University, and University of Michigan Space Science / Robotics
will discuss manned and unmanned robotics applications, ongoing and future.

* Urban Air Mobility - Keynote speaker will be John Langford (CEO of
Aurora Flight Sciences and President of AIAA). Panelists from NASA Ames,
NASA Langley, and Aurora Flight Sciences will discuss technologies and
visions for this emerging industry.

The keynote presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions will
be compiled and integrated into the future edition of the AIAA Roadmap
for Intelligent Systems in Aerospace.  A reception including posters and
lab tours is scheduled for the evening of July 26. In addition, there
will be an open mic session during the reception for any attendees who
are interested in presenting. If interested, please contact Daniel Selva
at [hidden email].

The workshop will be held at the University of Michigan (North Campus)
starting 8:00 am with a continental breakfast and ending at 5:00 pm on
each day. There will be an ISTC Technical Committee meeting in the
evening of July 27.

A registration fee of $150 per person will be collected to cover food
and refreshments.  The conference registration website

instructions.  Registration is still open. On-site registration will be
available during the workshop.

If you have any questions, please contact IS 2017 Workshop Chair Ella

workshop flyer, agenda, and hotel and parking information are currently
available on the website.

Sincerely,

Ella Atkins (University of Michigan) and the ISTC 2017 Workshop
Committee (Andrew Lacher, MITRE, Daniel Selva, Cornell University)
