I would like to bring your attention to the following workshop at the
RehabWeek in London:

*Content:*

Assistive robotic devices, such as active prosthesis, orthoses, and
exoskeletons have the potential to restore function for the millions of
people who experience mobility challenges due to injury and disability.
These devices actively assist and/or restore mobility for individuals with
muscular impairments, neurological injuries, or amputations.  For these
devices to gain widespread use as take-home systems, we have to be able to
answer the question "how good is this robot?" on a quantitative basis. We
also have to overcome the significant challenge of determining how to
control wearable robotic devices in order to maximize their long-term
energetic and biomechanical benefits.  This requires in-depth
investigations into the interactions between the function of the device and
the physiology of the human. With more and more complex devices, it becomes
particularly important to understand how device parameters influence the
performance of the user on a subject-specific basis. This is a question
that can often only be answered experimentally.



At the core of this workshop, we will discuss novel methods to
automatically perform a quantitative assessment or benchmarking of device
performance during use. Furthermore, we will investigate the potential of
such an automated assessment as a basis for device optimization. We will
discuss methods and their application in the real-time optimization of
assistive robotic devices. Such an automated evaluation will result in
devices that can self-monitor their performance, optimize their own
behavior, and continuously adapt to changing circumstances. This will open
up a radically new way of human robot interaction for wearable devices. It
will greatly increase their clinical viability and enable novel advanced
controllers and algorithms that can improve their symbiotic capabilities.
