[robotics-worldwide] [meetings] Second Call for Abstracts: RSS 2018 Full-Day Workshop on Design and Control of Small Legged Robots

Liyu Wang
We are pleased to announce our workshop on “Design and Control of Small
Legged Robots.”  This full-day workshop will take place during the 2018
Robotics: Science and Systems conference at the Carnegie Music Hall next to
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, on Saturday
June 30, 2018.

The official webpage of the workshop is

This workshop seeks to bring together researchers from planning and
mechanisms and design, and biology to examine the challenges and
opportunities surrounding the design and control of small legged robots. We
seek to investigate i) how new materials and processes can lead to unified
approaches in design and manufacturing of small legged robots in a reliable
and cost-efficient manner, and ii) what control approaches can ensure
reliable controlled operation of small legged robots in realistic case
studies. The goal is to report on state-of-the-art approaches, identify
problems, and devise new principles to meet current challenges for small
legged robots.

We will feature keynote presentations from both established as well as
early-career researchers, a panel discussion, and solicit extended
for poster and/or spotlight presentations from students and researchers.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Biological inspiration for design and control of small legged robots
- Novel materials for legged robot design
- Mechanism design
- Soft legged robotics
- Planning and control for multi-legged robots
- Sensing and perception for small robots

We particularly encourage young scientists working in these fields to
and interact!

*Call for Contributions:*
We invite submissions in the form of extended abstracts (up to 2 pages)
following RSS formatting guidelines.  Accepted contributions will be
featured in a poster session and/or through spotlight presentations, and
will be included in the workshop proceedings which will become available at
the workshop website.  We encourage work-in-progress to be submitted, and
will take this into account in the review process.

Submissions are due June 4, 2018 via the form: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__goo.gl_forms_&d=DwIFaQ&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=0w3solp5fswiyWF2RL6rSs8MCeFamFEPafDTOhgTfYI&m=rjqfnmvHiGcvuWnggVU3g4Kwx7R9leMiANjxyhD9R30&s=Nohp_H--w_EAvZ2GyI3C1nC79UH6TcNTmNUQE6rnkwY&e=

Notifications of acceptance will
be given by June 11, 2018.

*Travel Support:*
Through the generous support of the National Science Foundation, we are
happy to announce that the workshop will be able to offer travel
to *U.S.-based workshop contributors* to partially cover travel expenses.
All workshop contributors are eligible, and are strongly encouraged to
for a travel mini-award. The number of mini-awards to be made available is,
however, limited.  Priority will be given to workshop contributors from
communities underrepresented in STEM, and/or HBCU/MSI-accredited
Universities. Please contact us for more information.

*Important Dates:*
- Submission Deadline: June 4, 2018
- Notification of Acceptance: June 11, 2018
- Camera-Ready Posters: June 24, 2018
- Workshop Date: June 30, 2018
