Paper Submission Deadline: September 22, 2017, 5:00pm. PST

The 13th IEEE International Conference on AUTOMATIC FACE AND GESTURE RECOGNITION (FG 2018) will be held in Xi’an, China on May 16-18, 2018. The IEEE
conference series on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition is the premier international forum for research in image and video-based face, gesture, and
body movement recognition. Its broad scope includes: advances in fundamental computer vision, pattern recognition and computer graphics; machine learning
techniques relevant to face, gesture, and body motion; new algorithms and applications.  The conference presents research that advances the
state-of-the-art in these and related areas, leading to new capabilities in various application domains. For FG 2018 we are soliciting papers in all
areas of face and gesture recognition. This year, we are bringing the FG community closer to the affective computing and multimodal interaction
communities with a new dedicated track: "Computer vision in affective computing and multimodal interaction".

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Face recognition & biometrics

- Face analysis and synthesis

- Body action and activity recognition

- Psychological and behavioral analysis

- Computer vision in affective computing & multimodal interaction

- Gesture recognition, analysis and synthesis

- Technologies and applications

SUBMISSIONS

This year, we introduce short papers in addition to the traditional long papers. Long paper submissions may be up to 8 pages in conference format,
including references. Short papers may be up to 4 pages and an additional fifth page for references. Submissions to FG 2018 should represent original
research work that is not under review elsewhere. Special session papers will follow the same guidelines as normal conference papers, including
submission deadlines. All submissions will be rigorously assessed by a double-blind peer review process and should demonstrate clear novelty and/or
improvements over the existing state of the art. Papers accepted and presented at FG 2018 will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore. A selection
of the best reviewed papers from FG 2018 will be invited to a special issue of the Image and Vision Computing journal. Submission details are available
on the conference website.

************************************************************************

The 13th IEEE International Conference on AUTOMATIC FACE AND GESTURE RECOGNITION (FG 2018) will be held in Xi’an, China on May 16-18, 2018. The IEEE
conference series on Automatic Face and Gesture Recognition is the premier international forum for research in image and video-based face, gesture, and
body movement recognition. Its broad scope includes: advances in fundamental computer vision, pattern recognition and computer graphics; machine learning
techniques relevant to face, gesture, and body motion; new algorithms and applications.

The conference presents research that advances the state-of-the-art in these and related areas, leading to new capabilities in various application
domains. For FG 2018 we are soliciting papers in all areas of face and gesture recognition. This year, we are bringing the FG community closer to the
affective computing and multimodal interaction communities with a new dedicated track: "Computer vision in affective computing and multimodal
interaction".

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

- Face recognition & biometrics
- Face analysis and synthesis
- Body action and activity recognition
- Psychological and behavioral analysis
- Computer vision in affective computing & multimodal interaction
- Gesture recognition, analysis and synthesis
- Technologies and applications

We also want to welcome at the FG 2018 conference papers from behavioral and social science, which often increase our scientific knowledge instead of
presenting a technical and algorithmic novelty. For this reason, the “novelty” criteria used during FG 2018 review will be based on two sub-criteria
(i.e., scientific novelty and technical novelty as described below). Accepted papers at FG 2018 only need to be novel on one of these sub-criteria. In
other words, a paper which is strong on scientific knowledge contribution but low on algorithmic novelty should be ranked similarly to a paper that is
high on algorithmic novelty but low on knowledge discovery.
a. Scientific Novelty: Papers should bring some new knowledge to the scientific community. For example, discovering new behavioral markers that are
predictive of schizophrenia or Parkinson or on new behavioral patterns on children interactions during learning. It is the responsibility of the authors
to perform a proper literature review and clearly discuss the novelty in the scientific discoveries made in their paper.
b. Technical Novelty: Papers reviewed with this sub-criterion should include novelty in their computational approach for recognizing, generating or
modeling human face and gestures. The novelty can be in the learning and prediction algorithms, in the neural architecture or in the data representation.
Novelty can also be associated to a new usage of an existing approach.
